A Rich and Layered History

The origins of Cardiff Castle can be traced back to the late 11th century when Norman invaders built a motte and bailey castle on top of a 3rd-century Roman fort. The castle was commissioned either by William the Conqueror or Robert Fitzhamon, forming the heart of the medieval town of Cardiff and the Marcher Lord territory of Glamorgan.

In the 12th century, the castle began to be rebuilt in stone, with a shell keep and substantial defensive walls erected, likely by Robert of Gloucester. Further fortifications were added in the 13th century by Richard de Clare, the 6th Earl of Gloucester. Over the centuries, Cardiff Castle played a pivotal role in the conflicts between the Anglo-Normans and the Welsh, enduring several attacks and being stormed in 1404 during the revolt of Owain Glyndŵr.

A Victorian Transformation

In the 19th century, the castle underwent a remarkable transformation under the ownership of the Bute family. The 3rd Marquess of Bute, one of the wealthiest men of his time, collaborated with the renowned architect William Burges to create a lavish and opulent Victorian Gothic revival mansion within the castle walls. The result was a stunning blend of medieval and Victorian architecture, with each room adorned with intricate murals, stained glass, marble, gilding, and elaborate wood carvings.
