The castle played a key role in the power struggles between the Anglo-Normans and the Welsh and was stormed in 1404 during Owain Glyndŵr’s revolt.
A Victorian Transformation
In the 19th century, Cardiff Castle was dramatically transformed under the ownership of the Bute family. The 3rd Marquess of Bute, one of the wealthiest men of his time, worked with the renowned architect William Burges to create a luxurious Gothic revival residence within the medieval walls.
